Welcome to
Naperville READS
2008!

Once again, we are honored to present two highly celebrated authors along with a host of exciting events and programs

Naperville READS is our community’s version of the one book/ one city program popularized by the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library. The brainchild of librarian Nancy Pearl, this program spawned dozens of similar programs across the country. In 2002, the Naperville Public Library took the challenge, and embarked on its own journey. We joined forces with Anderson’s Bookshop and School Districts 203 and 204, and hosted the prolific writer Gary Paulsen. He was the perfect choice for our first endeavor, having written over 200 books that held wide-spread appeal to children, teens and adults. The goal of having one community joined together in the love of reading and discussion was met as residents flocked to the many events held in the Library, in the schools, at Anderson’s Bookshop and in small informal book groups.

Since then, Naperville READS has gone on to host luminaries such as Lisa See,Tracy Chevalier, Jodi Picoult,Yann Martell, Greg Mortenson and Joseph Bruchac.

In 2008, we are pleased to continue this proud tradition by hosting Daniel Pink, author of A Whole New Mind:Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, and Brian Selznick, author of the groundbreaking work, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, a story told in both words and pictures. It is the sincere wish of the Naperville READS Committee that you will show your support for this program by joining in the activities planned, whether it be a parent-child book group in the schools, a book discussion at the Library, or meeting with friends and neighbors to talk about the issues and themes in these two books. Naperville READS is made possible, in part, by a grant from the City of Naperville, and is a partnership between Anderson’s Bookshop, the Naperville Public Library, Naperville CUSD#203 and Indian Prairie CUSD#204.

Author Biographies

Daniel Pink is the author of A Whole New Mind:Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future. His book examines the rise of right-brain thinking in today’s economy, and lists the six abilities that individuals will need to possess in order to succeed in our new and outsourced world.Traditionally, students graduating from American colleges thought that a diploma was their ticket to financial success and security. Pink theorizes that a degree is no longer a sure thing, and that individuals need to reassess how they view the business world. His book introduces readers to the six senses: design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning. He devotes one chapter to each of these senses, describing how they are being integrated into today’s business life and everyday life. He also includes exercises that can be used to sharpen each of these senses. A popular and dynamic speaker, Dan Pink lectures to corporations, associations and universities around the world. He is a contributing editor at Wired, and has written for the New York Times, the Harvard Business Review and Fast Company. His analysis has been heard on NPR’s Morning Edition, CNBC’s Power Lunch and American Public Media’s Marketplace. He served from 1995 to 1997 as former Vice President Al Gore’s speechwriter and has worked as an aide to U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich.

Brian Selznick is the Caldecott Honor winning illustrator and New York Times bestselling author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret, this year’s Naperville READS choice for children and young adults. This book combines the elements of a picture book, a graphic novel and a film to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience. Hugo is an orphan and a thief who lives within the walls of a busy Paris train station. Living a secret existence, his very survival is threatened when his life intertwines with a strange little girl and the owner of a small toy shop within the station. His story unfolds as each page of this exceptional book is turned, intermingling words and pictures to move Hugo’s story forward. Brian Selznick is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and the recipient of many literary awards and distinctions. The Invention of Hugo Cabret was one of five National Book Award finalists in the Young People’s Literature category.
